Performing Images – Tibor Hajas brought to life
in collaboration with Matt Thorne and Wayne Holloway-Smith

Performing images is an innovative project brought to you by the Hungarian Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Austin/Desmond Fine Art Gallery, London.

We have invited British authors Matt Thorne and Wayne Holloway-Smith to write a short literary piece inspired by the artwork of the Hungarian performance artist Tibor Hajas for the current exhibition at the Austin/Desmond Gallery.

These pieces will be staged with the help of actors and actresses, thereby giving the artworks a contemporary British literary dimension. Walking through the exhibition, visitors will become part of the theatrical settings choosing freely how long to stay at a particular stage or retuning to enjoy the previous performance. The pieces will be performed simultaneously as well as continuously on 23rd June.

This exciting exhibition features some of the most important works of this internationally acclaimed artist from his most prolific series including 'Image Whipping' and 'Surface Torture', we aim to present an involving and experimental experience.

Filmmaker, performance artist and poet, Tibor Hajas produced the majority of his work in the 1970s during Hungary's 'closed' years under the Soviet authoritarian regime. Inspired by the Fluxus movement, Hajas started to make action art and conceptual works. In 1978 he began to undertake ritualistic performances, using his body as the medium. Inspired by the 'Viennese Actionists' as well as Eastern and Tibetan philosophy, he would test his own physical and psychological limits, walking the fine line between life and death in a search for total freedom.
