UK premiere of 'Strangled',
a dark and gritty thriller directed by Árpád Sopsits
at the BFI London Film Festival 2017

Seven years after a shocking murder, a killer strikes in the town of Martfű. Is it a copycat? Or is the wrong man in jail?

We are proud to announce that Hungarian film Strangled [A martfűi rém], winner of nine Hungarian Film Awards in 2017, is set to recieve its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival 2017Do not miss the two preview screenings at the Festival, followed by a Q&A with Director Árpád Sopsits.
Supported by the Hungarian Cultural Centre London.

Based on the true story of the Monster of Martfű, this chilling serial-killer drama uses a notorious murder spree of the late 1950s/early 1960s to paint a wider picture of Hungarian society. Though graphic and disturbing – the victims are all women and the murderer's appetite for sexual violence is never soft-pedalled – director Árpád Sopsits moves on from the crimes and their impact to examine justice in the post-war Communist era. Though by no means as open-ended, like David Fincher's Zodiac or Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder – against which Sopsits' film more than holds its own – Strangled shares an interest in obsession and investigation, a story of the pursuit rather than the pursued. - Damon Wise
