CONCERT

Hungariana
Three concerts at the Milton Court Concert Hall
Starring the Casals Quartet and Tamara Stefanovich

Journey into the world of Bartók, Ligeti and Kurtág: where music born from folklore, nature and the urban environment is concentrated into some of modern art's most playful and explosive masterworks.

Across three concerts, creative director Gerard McBurney pulls together material from various walks of Hungary's 20th-century artistic life, offering a small flavour of the country and its sometimes strange and tragic history.
Extracts from Hungary's rich literary canon and visual projections inspired by the distinctive, modernist, often brutal style of famed photographers such as Moholy-Nagy and Brassaï, coupled with a century of amateur photography, are contrasted with the luminous music of its three greatest 20th-century composers, in a juxtaposition of humanity and abstraction – even life and death – that permeates Hungarian art.
