Hungarian Lit Night: Katalin Street
UK book launch of the famous novel written by Magda Szabó
With Len Rix and novelist Tibor Fischer in conversation

Magda Szabó was one of Hungary's greatest post-war novelists. Widely published across Europe, the publication of her novel The Door brought her international recognition and was the winner of the Prix Femina and the Mondello Prize. It was made into a film with Helen Mirren in 2010.

Katalin Street, in which the lives of three intertwined families in pre-war Budapest are shattered by the German occupation, was first published in Hungary in 1969, but it took almost 50 years for an English translation to happen: NYRB Classics published it in the US in 2017. Len Rix won the PEN Translation Prize 2018 for his magnificent translation. The novel finally came out in the UK on 10 January 2019.

Len Rix and novelist Tibor Fischer will be in conversation at the Hungarian Cultural Centre on 20 February at 7pm to discuss Magda Szabó, her work and career, and Katalin Street.
