Celebrating Hungarian Film Day, we invite you to a light screening of the 2017 film Aurora Borealis.

Aurora Borealis is a family story with two twisting timelines. Mária (Mari Törőcsik), the elderly mother of Olga (Ildikó Tóth) – a successful lawyer living in Vienna, falls unexpectedly ill and is now in a coma. As Mária hovers between life and death, Olga incidentally unearths a secret that has been deliberately hidden. Her investigation takes her all the way back to a war-torn Europe of the 1950s. The film discusses the dramatic situations that grow out of identity crises, the open wounds caused by war in a shattered Europe, and the liberating power of lies unveiled.

With her latest film, pioneering Hungarian director Márta Mészáros continues to develop themes that she has analysed across her whole career, which spans half a century: denial of the past, search for roots and parents, and the consequences of the post-war Stalinist regime.

Aurora Borealis will be screened with original Hungarian audio and English subtitles. The screening is free, but registration is essential on Eventbrite. We regret that latecomers cannot be admitted to the event.

The film will be subtitled in English. The screening is free, but registration is essential on Eventbrite. We regret that latecomers cannot be admitted to the event.
